Overview

A Western United State diversified construction materials group wanted to integrate Type F fly ash into their business to meet ash demand. To achieve this objective, they engaged with a utility to harvest the ash from an existing impoundment that required processing to meet the ASTM C618 specification for commercial use. This required the implementation of an ash classification system.

Ash Classification System EPCM

Solutions

PENTA was engaged to support project development, which included permitting assistance by issuance of design documentation that allowed the Owner to obtain the environmental permit for the project. This early design development allowed PENTA to advance design through a FEED model that allowed the Owner to obtain internal project approval. The FEED stage also allowed for freezing the project concept, identifying, and obtaining equipment pricing for long lead time items.

Once project approval was obtained, PENTA was engaged to execute the project on a EPCM basis that consisted of advancing FEED level design through to detail engineering, supporting procurement including equipment quoting, bid evaluation and recommendation allowing the Owner to procure equipment, construction services bid package development allowing the Owner to procure construction services, and providing onsite Construction Management services, supported by resident engineering and regular safety audits, during construction. PENTA facilitated onsite dry and wet commissioning and performed project turnover and closeout.

Project Highlights

  • System was first of its kind for the intended use in North American.
  • (6) months onsite construction management services, resident engineering support and regular safety audits
  • Integration into a Brownfield environment at allowed for operation of new and existing systems with limited interruption.

Result:

The Owner is able to process waste ash into a supplementary cementitious material that meets the ASTM C618 specification and grow this area of their business.
